HISTORY
The beginnings
Given by a passion for novelty, in 1946 a young trader from Ferrara decided to set up “Distillerie A.R.P.A. di Mauro Moccia S.a.s.” Two years later, in 1948, the company’s name was changed to “Distillerie Moccia S.r.l.”
In a small building, and using typically artisan methods, the distillery produced a new, original-formula of egg liqueur which was registered under the ZABOV trademark.
The growth
ZABOV’s original formula and the founder’s remarkable business skills ensured that in just a few years sales rose vertiginously, making the company a market leader.
The outstanding quality of ZABOV was soon well known from Bolzano to Roma, then further south until to the italian islands. By about 1956 Distillerie Moccia was known throughout Italy and it was ready to progress from being a small artisan workshop to become a modern and organised company.
The success
By the late ‘60s Distillerie Moccia had a product range of 70 different liqueurs.
In addition to ZABOV, with a stable production of 1,000,000 litres per year, other very successful drinks were introduced to the market, such as Sambuca Greca or Amaretto Moccia. The company entered also into exclusive-distribution agreements with leading brands of Scotch whiskies, French cognacs and eastern-European spirits.
The fame
One factor in Distillerie Moccia’s growth and success was its major investments in advertising. In the ‘60s the company’s products sponsored for several years the most popular cycle race called “Giro d’Italia”. Then in the early ‘70s a lucky hunch led Distillerie Moccia to sponsor one of Italy’s most popular song contests, “Il Cantagiro”, which would later turn into the legendary “Festivalbar”. This marked the start of a partnership that lasted almost 20 years, the famous combination “Festivalbar… ZABOV Moccia Trophy”.
A change at the top
The year 1980 was one of important changes. Distillerie Moccia changed ownership, passing from the “Moccia family” to the “Ori family”, which still owns the company.
Boosted by the new management, corporate investment was further increased by implementing a new-generation IT system, machinery with a working capacity of 30,000 bottles per day and a new quality control structure involving the installation of state-of-the-art equipment to ensure absolute consistency in the quality of the distillery’s products.
Today
Distillerie Moccia’s turnover today is 100 times more than at the time of its establishment and ZABOV, the company’s top brand, became the leader of the Italian egg liqueur market
Distillerie Moccia and the Ori family continue to invest in the business, now as thirty years ago, and to respect tradition by maintaining the company’s Italian roots and the quality of its products.
In fact in 2013 Distillerie Moccia acquired from the Campari Group PUNCH BARBIERI, a brand leader in the market, like ZABOV, and another icon of Italian tradition.
